Abstract

This research aimed to 1) examine the relationship between online social media use and the quality of life, and 2) investigate the influence of online social media use on the quality of life of elderly people in Pathum Thani Province. A quantitative research design was employed. The sample consisted of 400 elderly residents selected through simple random sampling based on Yamane's formula. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was validated by experts, with Index of Item-Objective Congruence (IOC) values ranging from 0.66 to 1.00. The item discrimination indices ranged from 0.491–0.843 for online social media use and 0.623–0.845 for quality of life. Descriptive statistics, multiple correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used to analyze the data. The results revealed that frequency of use, duration of use, purpose of use, and level of participation had statistically significant positive relationships with and predictive influences on the overall quality of life of elderly people (p < .05). The regression model was statistically significant (F = 50.502, p < .001) and explained 65.6% of the variance in quality of life (Adjusted R² = 0.656). Among the four dimensions, duration of use demonstrated the strongest predictive influence on quality of life. The findings contribute to a better understanding of how digital engagement through social media can support elderly well-being, particularly in terms of social interaction, lifelong learning, and overall quality of life in an aging society. The results also provide empirical evidence that can support policymakers and relevant organizations in developing digital literacy programs and promoting appropriate social media use to enhance the well-being of older adults.
