The Effect of an 8 weeks Plyometric Movement Activities on Response Time in University-Level Karate Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
This preliminary experimental study aimed to: 1) investigate the effects of a plyometric training program on the reaction time of university students, and 2) compare the effects of this plyometric training on reaction time across different training periods. The sample comprised 15 students from the Karate Club at Thailand National Sports University, Udon Thani Campus, selected via purposive sampling. The research instruments included an 8-week plyometric training program (conducted three days per week) and a reaction time test. The test demonstrated a content validity index (IOC) of 0.80 and a test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.957. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics—including percentages, means, and standard deviations—and inferential statistics, specifically One-Way Repeated Measures ANOVA and the Friedman test, with the statistical significance level set at .05.
The results revealed a statistically significant difference in reaction times across the testing periods (1.51, 1.00, and 0.70 seconds, respectively; p < .05). Post-hoc pairwise comparisons utilizing Tukey's method indicated statistically significant differences between pre-training and week 4 post-training, pre-training and week 8 post-training, as well as between week 4 and week 8 post-training.
Conclusion: In conclusion, the plyometric program not only significantly improves reaction time but also demonstrably enhances athletes' overall physical fitness and competitive performance. These findings provide a practical and effective guideline for coaches seeking to optimize athletic development.
