Effects of Physical Education Activities using Basketball on Health-Related Physical Fitness of Students at Kalasin University
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of physical education activities using basketball on the health-related physical fitness of students at Kalasin University and to compare their health-related physical fitness before the intervention, after the fourth week, and after the eighth week. This research employed a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 52 students majoring in Physical Education at Kalasin University, selected through systematic random sampling. The research instruments included eight physical education activity plans based on basketball and the Health-Related Physical Fitness Test and Criteria for Individuals Aged 19–59 Years developed by the Department of Physical Education. The statistical analyses used in this study were percentage, mean, standard deviation, and one-way analysis of variance with repeated measures.
The findings revealed that participation in an 8-week basketball-based physical education program significantly improved health-related physical fitness components, including muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, and flexibility. In addition, subcutaneous fat thickness significantly decreased (p < .05) when compared across the pre-training period, the 4th week of training, and the 8th week of training. In contrast, body mass index showed no statistically significant differences across all assessment periods (p > .05). Furthermore, pairwise comparisons using Tukey’s post hoc test demonstrated statistically significant differences between the pre-training period and the 4th week of training, the pre-training period and the 8th week of training, and the 4th week and the 8th week of training.
In conclusion, the basketball-based physical education program was effective in continuously enhancing multiple components of health-related physical fitness over the eight-week period, although it did not result in a significant change in BMI.
