THE APPLICATION OF THE PRINCIPLE OF GOOD FAITH TO PROMOTE LOCAL ELECTION BEHAVIOR

Abstract

This academic article presents an approach to applying the "principle of integrity" to foster positive local election behaviors and promote sustainable democratic development. While local elections serve as a cornerstone of decentralization and public participation, they currently face structural challenges-such as vote-buying, corruption, conflicts of interest, and patronage-based political cultures-that compromise the quality of local leadership and undermine confidence in the democratic system. Addressing these issues requires integrating the principle of integrity-encompassing honesty, correctness, transparency, equity, and good faith-among both candidates, who should compete based on policy and competence, and voters, who should exercise their rights judiciously with a focus on the public interest rather than short-term gains. Furthermore, success in this endeavor relies on multi-sectoral cooperation, including education and civic consciousness-building, strict and fair law enforcement, the creation of public spaces for information scrutiny, and the cultivation of exemplary leaders. Together, these efforts aim to foster a transparent political culture, paving the way for robust and sustainable democratic development extending from the grassroots level to the national stage.
