Process of Empowerment Teenage Mothers and the Interdisciplinary Team at Rajavithi Hospital

Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the empowerment process among adolescent mothers with unintended pregnancy at Rajavithi Hospital and to examine the roles of the multidisciplinary team in this process.

Methodology: A qualitative research design was employed. The key informants consisted of two groups: 1) five adolescent mothers with unintended pregnancy and 2) five multidisciplinary team members, totaling ten participants. Data were collected through structured interviews and analyzed using descriptive content analysis.

Findings: Although adolescent mothers with unintended pregnancy experienced similar problems, the causes and empowerment processes varied depending on individual factors and social contexts, such as parenting styles, educational level, cognitive patterns, beliefs, and family relationships. However, common elements of the empowerment process were identified, including recognizing the actual situation, engaging in critical reflection, making appropriate decisions, and maintaining effective practices. Furthermore, the findings revealed that multidisciplinary team members, despite having different professional roles, collaborated through seamless coordination, holistic information sharing, collective efforts in empowerment, and continuous integrated care.

Applications of this study: The findings suggest that strengthening the roles of multidisciplinary teams in the empowerment process can enhance the quality of life of adolescent mothers with unintended pregnancy and their children in a sustainable manner.
