Enhancing the Competitiveness of Tourism in Upper Northern Thailand along The R3A Route Under The Belt and Road Initiative Cooperation

Abstract

“China's Belt and Road Initiative” is a policy aimed at enhancing regional transportation connectivity along economic corridors, such as the R3A route, which has significant economic, tourism, and cultural impacts. This route serves as a critical link among China, Laos, and Thailand. Despite the current decline in tourist numbers due to changing tourism preferences, the route still holds potential in terms of logistics and trade. Thus, this article aims to study the utilization of the R3A route to enhance the competitiveness of tourism in upper northern Thailand under the framework of “China’s Belt and Road Initiative”. The study examines the Belt and Road Initiative’s impact on China's tourism sector, the tourism development plan for upper northern Thailand, as well as the challenges and opportunities for tourism development along Thailand’s R3A route. The study found that to improve tourism competitiveness along the R3A route under Thailand’s Belt and Road Initiative, strategic planning in collaboration with Laos and China is essential. It also requires infrastructure development, the provision of high-standard tourism services, promoting of travel safety, enhancing personnel capabilities, utilizing digital media for promotion, supporting local products, establishing service quality standards, and promoting local culture. These measures aim to boost the economy and foster sustainable international relations.
