The Uncrossable Otherness in Idioms: A Case Study of the Chinese Translation of the Idioms in Seni Saowaphong’s Novel "Ghosts"

Probing into the translation otherness of the idioms in “Ghosts”, a novel written by Seni Saowaphong, from Thai to Chinese is the purpose of this research. Through dissecting the languages in two versions, especially in expressions, the technique of translating idioms could be featured in two aspects: firstly, translating idioms that have different meanings from the originals; secondly, choosing new words that lack literary value. Consequently, it was found that in the Chinese version of this Thai novel, the main translation otherness in converting from Thai idioms were the retelling of cultural connotations, the correctness of the meaning and the accurate expression of language. This shows the difficulty of perfectly matching Thai idioms with Chinese idioms in expressions. In this study, the researchers only focused on the process of the uncrossable otherness, but its strategies and problems have not been deeply analyzed. Hence, if there is any further interest. it is advised to study this issue in depth and carefully to provide guidance and help for improving the quality of Thai-Chinese literary translation.
