Impacts and solution guidelines for communities affected by the gold and copper mining project in Vilabouly, Savannakhet Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic

This research aimed to 1. study the physical, biological, social, and economic impacts of the Vilabouly gold and copper mining project in Savannakhet Province, Lao People's Democratic Republic, and 2. propose solutions for communities affected by the project. It was mixed-methods research, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. The sample consisted of 260 representatives of households affected by the Vilabouly gold and copper mining project, determined using the Krejcie & Morgan table at a 95% confidence level. Stratified sampling and simple random sampling were used, with no substitution. Key informants were 31 individuals involved in addressing the impacts of the gold and copper mining project, selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included 260 five-level rating scale questionnaires with content validity between 0.80 and 1.00 and a reliability coefficient of 0.83, and structured interviews. Quantitative data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while qualitative content analysis was used. The research results found that 1. the overall impact and the impacts in each aspect, consisting of the physical, biological, and social and economic aspects of the Vilabouly gold and copper mining project, were at a high level. 2. The guidelines for solving problems of communities affected by the Vilabouly gold and copper mining project include 2.1 physical aspects, namely guidelines for solving problems from mineral blasting, fires, and land erosion; 2.2 biological aspects, namely guidelines for solving problems from the destruction of aquatic animals in nature, wild animals in nature, and livestock; and 2.3 social and economic aspects, namely guidelines for solving problems from the removal and destruction of war weapons, reduced assistance from other development projects, and transportation of the project that causes traffic congestion and accidents in the community.
