The Set Design of Guitar Skill Practices Using Chord Inversions on the Basic Blues Jazz Song in Higher Education by a Cooperative Learning Method

Abstract

The purposes of this research aimed to develop and determine the effectiveness of a set of guitar skill practices designed using chord inversions on blues-jazz songs in higher education by a cooperative learning method. The research samples consisted of 9 students from an overall of 19 third year music students majoring in guitar, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Chiang Mai Rajabhat University. The samples were selected by using a purposive sampling method among students who passed the pre-test with a score of not less than 60 percent to group students with different abilities from weak to strong in a group of 3. There were 3 groups in total. The research instruments include: 1) skill practices 2) documents for skill practices 3) worksheets 4) backing tracks 5) pre-test 6) in-class test and 7) post-test. The data were collected and analyzed by using percentage, mean, and standard deviation.

                        The results of the study found that the efficiency of the set design of guitar skill practices using chord inversions on Blues Jazz Song in higher education by a cooperative learning method was totally 83.11/82.71, which was higher than the set criteria of 80/80 according to the research hypothesis. Besides, the contents of skill practices were developed in Thai including descriptions in stepwise practices and a role of each student in the group were clearly indicated. Consequently, the students acquired the knowledge of chords and skill to be able to utilize all kinds of chord inversions from the set of practices through the group activities of cooperative learning.
