Learning activities on the history and legends of Bueng Lom and Thong Phra Rong using community-based learning through the integration of geography and local history for grade 11 students in Phrom Phiram District, Phitsanulok Province

Abstract

This research aimed to: 1. investigate the current situation of local history learning management, and 2. develop learning activities that integrate community-based learning with geography and local history. This study employed a qualitative research approach. The key informants consisted of history teachers, grade 11 students, and community members. The research instruments comprised semi-structured interviews, participant observation, reflection forms, and field notes. Data were analyzed using content analysis and analytical induction, with their credibility verified through triangulation. The findings indicated the management of local history learning was not systematically implemented and predominantly relied on textbook instruction, with minimal incorporation of community resources. The learning activities they designed prompted students to participate in fieldwork, carry out interviews, analyze local historical evidence, and produce their own learning products. Consequently, students exhibited a deeper understanding of local history and were able to connect historical knowledge with geographical context in a more meaningful way. The activities also enhanced students’ analytical thinking, communication skills, and collaborative learning. Furthermore, students developed a greater sense of pride in their community and an awareness of the importance of effectively preserving local cultural heritage. These findings indicate that integrating community-based with geography and local history can effectively foster meaningful learning and enhance students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes towards local history.
