Affecting factors of the vocational training success for prisoners in Pra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Prison

Abstract

This study aimed to examine 1. the key factors related to the success of vocational training for inmates and 2. to propose practical development strategies for Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Prison. A convergent mixed-methods design was employed. Quantitative data were collected from all 195 inmates who participated in vocational training using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire, while qualitative data were obtained from semi-structured interviews with eight administrators and staff. The quantitative results showed that all six factors were rated highly. The instructor and staff factors got the highest ratings, while the environmental conditions got the lowest. The qualitative results supported these findings, highlighting the importance of updated training curricula, staff competence in skill transfer, adequate learning equipment, and supportive training environments. Based on the integrated results, recommendations include updating curricula to align with labor-market needs, enhancing staff instructional skills, and improving training facilities to create safer and more conducive learning spaces. The study gives empirical information on the elements that contribute to effective inmate vocational training and offers implications for correctional policy, particularly in strengthening rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.
