An Analytical Study of Phra Pothila and the Symbolism of Blank Palm-Leaf Manuscripts

Abstract

         This research article aims to study the biography, Buddhist practice, and roles of Phra Photila, as well as to analyze lessons and insights applicable to self-development for monks and the general public. The study employed a qualitative documentary research approach, collecting data from documents, palm-leaf manuscripts, and related research studies. The findings reveal that Phra Photila played a significant role in education, the propagation of Buddhism, and the preservation of palm-leaf manuscripts. The criticism of him as a “monk with blank palm leaves” reflected social, cultural, and religious interpretive contexts. Moreover, Phra Photila developed himself by applying the Seven Factors of a Good Person (Sappurisa Dhamma 7) and the Four Bases of Success (Iddhipada 4) in cultivating morality, virtues, and systematic Buddhist practice. His dissemination of Dhamma to the community fostered shared learning and balanced self-development with social responsibility. The study highlights that self-development should integrate education, practice, morality, resilience, and knowledge sharing for the benefit of society.
