An Evaluation of the Outcome of the Agricultural Production Groups Strengthening Project on Farmers’ Income Enhancement

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the outcome of implementing the agricultural production groups strengthening project on the enhancement of income from the groups among member farmers. Multi-stage sampling was conducted to collect data. First, 12 provinces were selected using purposive sampling. Then, 36 farmer organizations were chosen through simple random sampling without replacement. Next, farmers participating in the project were sampled using simple random sampling without replacement, while non-participating farmers were selected purposively, resulting in 215 and 186 individuals, respectively. Altogether, the total sample consisted of 401 farmers. The data were analyzed using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM) method. The study revealed that the project’s support in terms of knowledge and production inputs contributed to increasing farmers’ group income. Specifically, farmer group members who received land allocation from the Agricultural Land Reform Office (ALRO) and members of the farmers’ housewives groups within the project earned, on average, 28,482 baht and 12,638 baht per year more from group activities than those without the project, respectively. The study recommends that future project implementation should adopt a bottom-up approach to better align knowledge and production factor support with farmers’ needs.
